Detailed Review
The BLACK+DECKER LST522 20V MAX 12 Inch Cordless String Trimmer and Wheeled Edger combines grass trimming and border edging into a single lightweight lawn tool. Designed for homeowners who want clean yard lines without managing separate tools, this model relies on a 20V MAX battery system for cord-free operation.
Performance is driven by a two-speed control system paired with a PowerDrive Transmission, which increases torque directly at the cutting string to manage dense growth. When dealing with thick grass, switching to the higher power setting provides extra muscle. For routine maintenance across larger areas, selecting the lower power mode optimizes battery efficiency. The Automatic Feed Spool (AFS) continuously dispenses line as you work, preventing the need to stop for manual line adjustments.
Transitioning between functions is straightforward, as the head rotates into a wheeled edger to guide straight lines along walkways and driveways. To reduce physical strain during extended yard care, the tool features customizable height adjustments and a configurable handle. A micro-texture soft grip helps maintain steady control across both trimming and edging configurations.
In terms of trade-offs, total operating time depends on your chosen power setting. Operating the trimmer continuously on high speed draws more power from the included 2.5Ah battery than running it on low speed. Additionally, while the package includes the essential guard, charger, battery, and a single spool, maintaining larger properties may eventually require extra spools or spare batteries from the compatible 20V MAX lineup.
Verdict: The BLACK+DECKER LST522 is a practical option for homeowners seeking a versatile two-in-one tool for routine lawn edging and trimming. Its combination of automatic line feeding, dual-speed controls, and adjustable ergonomics makes standard yard maintenance straightforward and comfortable.
